Olga Sykioti

Dr. Olga Sykioti obtained her BSc with first class honors in Geology and Geoenvironment from the National Kapodistrian University Athens (1988). She obtained her MSc in Remote Sensing (1990), MSc in Hydrology, Geostatistics and Geochemistry (1991) and her PhD in Geosciences and Remote Sensing (December 1994) from Pierre & Marie Curie University (Paris, France). From 1995 to 2005 she worked in as image processing and photogrammetry specialist in the private sector and in parallel as postdoctoral researcher at the National Observatory of Athens (NOA). Since 2006, she is researcher at the Institute for Astronomy, Astrophysics, Space Applications and Remote Sensing of NOA with specialty in hyperspectral and SAR remote sensing in land environment applications. Her scientific interests include the development and application of advanced satellite hyperspectral and microwave image and signal processing techniques and methods in geosciences with emphasis in monitoring natural ecosystems, mineral detection and geological mapping, monitoring ground deformation and tectonic activity (earthquakes, landslides, erosion). In 1989, she was awarded the G. Papastamatiou award for first class honors in geology, in 1989 she was also awarded a excellence fellowship from the Academy of Athens and in 1991 she received an excellence fellowship from France (Allocation de Recherche – Ministère de l’Enseignement Supérieur et de la Recherche, France) for conducting her PhD research. Furthermore, in 2009 she was awarded with a Fullbright research fellowship in USA. She is (co-)author of more than 60 peer-reviewed scientific publications in journals and international conference proceedings, she has participated in more than 70 conferences, has been member of the scientific committee of 5 workshops, and has been (co-)author of numerous scientific and technical reports. Currently, she is reviewer in 10 top ranked scientific journals in the area of remote sensing. She has developed numerous collaborations and she has participated in 25 international, Εuropean, European Space Agency and national funded research projects. Finally, since 2011, she is international reviewer of research proposals in "Measures to Attract Leading Scientists to Russian Educational Institutions" in the thematic areas of “Space Research and Technology” and “Environment”, organized by the New Eurasia Foundation (Russian Federation in cooperation with DLR). Furthermore, she has also given several courses and seminars, has been supervisor and member of supervising committees of several BSc, MSc and PhD students and she has been member of PhD examination committees. She has currently under her supervision a team of 3 MSc students, 1 PhD student and 2 post-doctoral researchers. Olga Sykioti is fluent in English, French, Spanish and Hindi language.
